What to Include in Your Wedding Detail Box: A Guide to Bridal Flat Lay Photos | Northern California Wedding Photographer (Updated)

Your wedding day is made up of so many beautiful little details. From the shoes you carefully chose to the jewelry passed down through generations, every piece tells a part of your love story. As a Northern California wedding photographer, one of my favorite ways to preserve these memories is through detail photography and flat lay images.

Before the dress is on, before the flowers are in your hands, and before you walk down the aisle, there are so many little pieces of your wedding day worth remembering.

One of the best ways to prepare for these photographs is to gather your wedding details into a bridal box for your photographer. Having everything together makes the morning run more smoothly and gives your photographer time to create beautiful, thoughtfully styled images of the things that matter most to you.

But here is the thing I want every couple to remember: **every flat lay is different, and there is no right or wrong way to style yours.**

Some couples love a classic, elegant flat lay filled with invitations, rings, shoes, and flowers. Others want to include sentimental heirlooms, handwritten vows, a grandmother's quilt, or a piece of jewelry that has been passed down for generations. Some couples want individual bridal detail photos, while others want a collection of details representing both the bride and groom.

Your details should reflect YOU, your relationship, and the little things that make your wedding day uniquely yours.

What Is a Wedding Detail Box?

A wedding detail box is a collection of the small, meaningful items you want your photographer to photograph on your wedding day. These items are typically gathered before the wedding so your photographer can photograph them while you are getting ready.

Wedding detail photos, often called flat lays, are styled photographs of items such as wedding invitations, rings, jewelry, shoes, perfume, flowers, vow books, cuff links, and sentimental keepsakes.

As a wedding photographer serving Burney, Redding, Shasta County, Lassen County, and surrounding Northern California areas, I love when couples take a little time to gather these pieces before the wedding. It allows me to focus on creating beautiful images without having to search through bags, boxes, and getting-ready spaces for each item.

Think of your detail box as a little time capsule of your wedding day.

The Bridal Detail Box Checklist

Here are some of my favorite items to include when preparing for your bridal flat lay photos.

1. Wedding Stationery and Paper Details

Your wedding stationery helps tell the story of your wedding day, from the colors and design to the little details your guests first saw when they received their invitations.

Consider including:

- Wedding invitation suite

- Save-the-date card

- Ceremony program

- Menu cards

- Place cards or escort cards

- Custom vow books

- Handwritten letters to each other

- Wedding day itinerary

- Envelope with a pretty stamp

- Ribbon, wax seals, or other stationery embellishments

Photographer tip- If you have extra invitations or stationery, set aside a clean copy specifically for photographs. It gives your photographer more flexibility when arranging your flat lay.

2. Your Rings and Jewelry

Your wedding rings are some of the most meaningful details of the entire day. They symbolize your commitment, and they deserve a few beautiful photographs of their own.

Consider including:

- Engagement ring

- Both wedding bands

- Ring box or ring dish

- Earrings

- Necklace

- Bracelet

- Hair accessories

- Pearls or heirloom jewelry

- A watch or other meaningful accessory

- A piece of jewelry passed down from a family member

Maybe your grandmother gifted you a pair of pearl earrings. Maybe you are wearing your mother's wedding necklace. Maybe your ring box was chosen specifically to match your wedding aesthetic.

These are the little details that make your photographs personal. They do not need to be expensive or perfectly coordinated to be meaningful.

3. Bridal Shoes, Veil, and Getting-Ready Details

Sometimes the smallest details make the prettiest photographs. Your shoes, veil, and getting-ready accessories can help tell the story of your bridal look before you even step into your dress.

Consider including:

- Wedding shoes

- Veil

- Hairpiece or bridal comb

- Perfume

- Wedding dress hanger

- Garter

- Ribbon in your wedding colors

- Handkerchief

Something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue

If you have a personalized hanger with your new last name, wedding date, or initials, bring it along! A simple wooden or velvet hanger can also photograph beautifully.

4. Flowers and Styling Accessories

Flowers add color, texture, and a natural element to wedding detail photographs. They can tie your invitations, jewelry, and other accessories together while bringing your wedding color palette into the images.

If possible, ask your florist to set aside a few loose blooms or greenery for your photographer.

Consider including:

- A few loose wedding flowers

- Greenery from your bouquet

- Extra floral stems

- Silk or satin ribbon

- Lace or fabric from your dress

- A ring dish

- Decorative trays or small styling pieces

You do not need to purchase extra decor just for your flat lays. Your photographer may be able to style the items you already have, and your bouquet can often be incorporated into the photographs, too.

5. Sentimental Keepsakes and Family Heirlooms

This is one of my favorite categories because these are the details that cannot be replicated.

Your wedding does not have to look like a styled editorial or a Pinterest inspiration board to have beautiful detail photographs. Sometimes, the most meaningful images come from the items that carry the most history.

Consider including:

- Grandma's quilt or a family heirloom textile

- A grandmother's or mother's wedding jewelry

- A handwritten letter from a loved one

- A family Bible

- A sentimental handkerchief

- A locket with a photograph inside

- A family wedding photograph

- An heirloom ring

- A special charm or keepsake

- Something that honors a loved one who cannot be there

- A meaningful item representing your family, culture, or relationship

If an item has a story behind it, tell your photographer! Knowing why something matters can help us photograph it with extra care and intention.

You do not need to include every item on this list. Choose the pieces that feel most like you.

Don't Forget the Groom's Details!

Wedding detail photos are not just for the bride! I love when couples set aside a few meaningful items for the groom, too. These photographs help tell the story of both people getting ready for their wedding day.

Groom's detail box checklist

- Dress shoes and socks

- Tie or bow tie

- Cuff links

- Watch

- Cologne

- Belt

- Pocket square

- Tie clip

- Boutonniere or loose floral pieces

- Wedding band

- Ring box

- Handwritten vows

- A handwritten letter to the bride

- Family heirloom or sentimental accessory

- Bible or other meaningful book

- Handkerchief

- Personalized gifts or accessories

If your groom has a special watch from his father, cuff links from his grandfather, or a handwritten note he plans to give you before the ceremony, those details are worth photographing, too.

Keep the bride's and groom's items together in separate labeled bags or boxes if you are getting ready in different locations. This helps your photographer find everything efficiently.

Want Bride and Groom Flat Lay Photos? Here Is What to Know

Some couples prefer to have their details photographed separately, while others want a combined flat lay featuring items from both sides of the wedding day.

A combined flat lay might include both wedding bands, the invitation suite, flowers, the bride's jewelry, the groom's cuff links, vow books, and other personal details arranged together in one cohesive image.

These photographs can be especially beautiful because they bring both of your stories together in one frame.

However, if you would like detailed flat lays for both the bride and groom, be sure to let your photographer know ahead of time.

Creating styled flat lays takes time. Your photographer may need to clean and prepare a surface, arrange and rearrange items, work with the available natural light, and photograph different combinations before everything feels just right.

If you want separate bridal and groom detail photographs, a combined flat lay, and individual photographs of sentimental items, your photographer will need additional time in the wedding day timeline.

I recommend discussing your priorities with your photographer before the wedding so they can build enough time into the getting ready portion of your day.

How Much Time Should You Set Aside for Wedding Detail Photos?

Every wedding day is different, and the amount of time needed depends on the number of items, the complexity of the styling, lighting conditions, and whether your photographer is photographing one set of details or multiple collections.

As a starting point, you can discuss the following with your photographer:

Simple detail collection:  Approximately 20–30 minutes

More detailed bridal flat lay: Approximately 30–45 minutes

Separate bridal and groom details or multiple styled arrangements:  Approximately 60 minutes

These are general planning estimates, not guaranteed coverage times. Your photographer can recommend a more accurate time frame based on your priorities and wedding day schedule.

If detail photography is important to you, I would much rather know ahead of time than have you feel rushed on the morning of your wedding.

The goal is to create beautiful photographs while keeping your wedding morning relaxed and enjoyable.

How to Prepare Your Wedding Detail Box Before the Big Day

A little preparation can make a huge difference!

Here are a few simple ways to make your wedding detail photos run smoothly:

1. Gather everything in one place. Use a small box, tote, or bag to keep your details together. If you have separate items for the bride and groom, label them.

2. Include your paper goods. Set aside a full invitation suite and any additional stationery you would love photographed.

3. Ask your florist for loose blooms. A few extra flowers or greenery stems can add a beautiful finishing touch to your flat lays.

4. Keep sentimental items safe. Place heirloom jewelry, rings, and other meaningful pieces somewhere secure until your photographer is ready for them.

5. Tell your photographer what matters most.  If there is an item with a special story, make sure your photographer knows about it. You can even make a short list of must-have detail photographs.

6. Allow enough time.  Include detail photography in your timeline before the wedding day, especially if you want both bridal and groom details photographed.

7. Do not feel pressured to buy anything extra. You do not need expensive ring boxes, luxury accessories, or perfectly coordinated props. Your wedding details should reflect your own story and priorities.

Those details matter because they are yours.

As a Northern California wedding photographer, my goal is to capture the beauty of your wedding day in a way that feels true to you. From the carefully planned details to the unexpected candid moments, every piece contributes to the story we are preserving.

Your flat lays may look different from someone else's, and that is exactly how it should be.
